Repair or replace your furnace, boiler, AC or heat pump?

Pick the equipment and its age, add a repair quote if you have one, and see where it stands. Then talk to a local company that can inspect it.

Get both prices: repair and replace.

General guidance from ENERGY STAR age guidelines and a common rule of thumb. The company that inspects your system decides what it needs.

    How the check works

    Two simple tests.

Age. ENERGY STAR suggests considering a replacement for air conditioners and heat pumps older than 10 years, and for furnaces and boilers older than 15 years. Equipment past those ages often runs less efficiently and needs more repairs.

The $5,000 rule of thumb. Multiply the equipment's age by the repair price. If the result is over $5,000, replacing usually costs less over time. A 16-year-old furnace with a $400 repair gives $6,400, so a replacement price is worth getting.

Both are rules of thumb, not a diagnosis. The company that inspects your system decides what it needs.

    When safety decides it

A cracked heat exchanger can let carbon monoxide into your home. If a technician finds one, don't run the furnace until it's repaired or replaced.

    When refrigerant decides it

Air conditioners and heat pumps that use R-22 refrigerant get expensive to repair, because the EPA ended R-22 production in 2020.

    Questions

    Questions before you call.

    Do repair visits cost money?

Many companies charge a diagnostic or trip fee for a repair visit, and some charge more for nights or weekends. Ask about fees when you're connected, and ask whether the repair price is fixed before any work starts.

Is there a tax credit for a new furnace or heat pump in 2026?

The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) ended for equipment installed after December 31, 2025, so 2026 installs don't qualify. Many gas and electric utilities still run rebate programs with their own rules. Ask the company you speak with which utility rebates apply to your home.

Can I finance a new system?

Many local heating and cooling companies offer financing through their lending partners. Ask them for the terms, including the interest rate and total cost, and compare before you sign.

    Is the call free?

Yes. Calling Heat & Air 365 is free and you don't have to hire anyone. If you choose to work with a company, you pay that company directly for its work.

    Who will I talk to?

After two quick questions, we connect your call to an independent local heating and cooling company that serves your ZIP code, when one is available. Heat & Air 365 is a referral service. We don't do the work ourselves.
