Cold climates

Heat pumps in a Midwest winter.

A heat pump moves heat instead of burning fuel. Cold-climate models are built to keep heating in deep cold, and many homes in cold regions pair one with a gas furnace. The heat pump handles most of the season and the furnace takes over on the coldest nights. That setup is called dual fuel.

New split heat pumps must meet at least 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2 (American Standard). Ask the company how the system is sized for your coldest nights and what backup heat it includes.

Ductless mini-splits

A mini-split puts a small indoor unit on the wall and needs no ducts. It fits additions, attic rooms, sunrooms and older homes heated by radiators.

Repair

Heat pump not heating?

  • Check the thermostat is set to Heat, not Cool or Auto, and the setpoint is above room temperature.
  • Frost on the outdoor unit in winter is normal. It should clear during a defrost cycle; a solid block of ice isn't normal.
  • Check the air filter and make sure the outdoor unit isn't buried in snow.

Still cold? Call and tell us your ZIP. We'll connect you with a local company for a repair visit where one is available.

Questions

Questions before you call.

Will a heat pump keep my house warm below zero?

Cold-climate heat pumps are designed for it, but sizing matters. Ask the company how the system performs at your area's coldest temperatures and what backup heat is included.

Is there a tax credit for a new furnace or heat pump in 2026?

The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) ended for equipment installed after December 31, 2025, so 2026 installs don't qualify. Many gas and electric utilities still run rebate programs with their own rules. Ask the company you speak with which utility rebates apply to your home.

Can I finance a new system?

Many local heating and cooling companies offer financing through their lending partners. Ask them for the terms, including the interest rate and total cost, and compare before you sign.

Do repair visits cost money?

Many companies charge a diagnostic or trip fee for a repair visit, and some charge more for nights or weekends. Ask about fees when you're connected, and ask whether the repair price is fixed before any work starts.

Is the call free?

Yes. Calling Heat & Air 365 is free and you don't have to hire anyone. If you choose to work with a company, you pay that company directly for its work.

Who will I talk to?
