Safe checks before you call.
These are simple and safe. Don't open burner panels or try to relight anything yourself.
Check the thermostat
Set it to Heat, raise the setpoint a few degrees above room temperature, and replace the batteries if the screen is blank.
Check the power
Find the furnace switch near the unit (it looks like a light switch) and make sure it's on. Check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker.
Check the door and filter
The furnace won't run if the front panel isn't closed tight. A badly clogged filter can make it shut off; replace it if it's gray and packed.
Check drains and vents
On high-efficiency furnaces, look for water around the unit and make sure the white plastic vent pipes outside aren't blocked by snow or ice.
Smell gas, or a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding? Leave the house now and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Don't flip switches or try to restart the furnace.
When to call.
If the checks didn't help, or the furnace starts and shuts off again, call and tell us your ZIP. We'll connect you with an independent local heating company for a repair visit where one is available.
Many companies charge a diagnostic or trip fee, and some charge more at night or on weekends. Ask about fees when you're connected.
Is your furnace 15 years or older? Use the repair or replace check before you pay for a big repair.
